How Do You Get a Crossbow in Skyrim?

Prime for Young Adults: check your eligibility on Amazon

Most players expect crossbows to appear in ordinary blacksmith shops or dungeon chests, but Skyrim never puts them into standard loot pools. Instead, the fastest route is to visit Fort Dawnguard southeast of Riften, where a recruit named Durak immediately gives out a free crossbow and steel bolts during your first conversation.

A few game details change how this plays out. First, your copy needs the Dawnguard add-on pack, which comes pre-installed in the Special and Anniversary editions. City guards only bring up rumors about the fortress at level 10, but anyone can travel there at level 1 to claim the gear early. Faction choices matter later on, because joining the vampire side locks you out of advanced weapon upgrades and bolt crafting. Here is how to find the hidden mountain entrance and collect your first weapon.

Durak Gives You a Free Crossbow at Fort Dawnguard

New and returning players often check every blacksmith from Riverwood to Solitude. Shops like Warmaiden's in Whiterun sell hundreds of wooden hunting bows, but their inventories never contain a crossbow. Standard loot chests in bandit hideouts also leave them out. Crossbows belong entirely to the Dawnguard game add-on pack, which comes pre-installed in Special and Anniversary editions but stays locked away from town merchants.

You do not have to wait for rumors or high character levels to get one. Many guides claim you must reach level 10 before starting the Dawnguard storyline. That level trigger only controls when city guards begin gossiping and when an Orc named Durak approaches you in major holds. The actual faction base is open the minute you leave Helgen, meaning you can walk straight there at level 1.

Your free weapon is waiting right outside the stronghold entrance. Once you reach Fort Dawnguard, look for Durak standing in the outer courtyard firing practice shots at wooden target dummies. Talk to him, tell him you want to help fight vampires, and he immediately hands you a basic crossbow with 45 steel bolts. You can also pick up a second free crossbow and spare ammunition from the wooden crates resting near the targets.

Crossbows behave very differently from standard wooden bows. When you draw a regular bow, pull weight (how much muscular effort it takes to pull the bowstring back) requires time and stamina to steady your shot before you release. A crossbow loads ahead of time and gives you complete holding weight relief, so you can walk around with a bolt ready to shoot instantly. While shooters in modern sports compare how a crossbow for hunting balances flight speed, Skyrim gives your crossbow an innate 50 percent chance to stagger any incoming monster.

Walk Southeast from Riften to Find the Hidden Canyon Pass

The hardest part for most players is physically locating the fort. If you open your map menu, you will not see Fort Dawnguard marked anywhere on the southern mountain range. The castle sits inside a hidden pocket valley reached through a disguised cave passage called Dayspring Canyon (the hidden cave pass near Riften). Without knowing which cliff opening to look for, you can easily wander the border mountains for hours.

  1. Fast travel to Riften Stables, or hire the carriage outside Whiterun for 20 gold coins if you have not discovered Riften yet.
  2. Walk south along the stone road leading past the Riften city gate and the Khajiit trading camp.
  3. Follow the southern road as it bends east toward the snowy mountains, passing small farmhouses and rocky hills.
  4. Watch the high cliff wall lining the north side of the road, just before you reach the outpost called Stendarr's Beacon.
  5. Look for a narrow gap in the cliff face marked by an iron wall torch, a wooden post, and hanging green vines.
  6. Step into the dark rock gap to trigger the loading screen into Dayspring Canyon (the hidden cave pass near Riften).
  7. Follow the descending dirt path through the mountain meadow and continue forward until the massive stone castle appears over the lake.

Do not let the quiet entrance trick you. The cave cleft looks like an ordinary, shallow crack in the rock from the main road. If you walk past Stendarr's Beacon and start climbing snowy drifts toward the southern border, you have gone too far east. Turn around and follow the rocky mountain wall until the hanging torchlight catches your eye.

Craft or Buy Steel Bolts to Keep Your Quiver Full

Finding your first weapon solves only half of your problem. Standard iron, steel, and elven arrows cannot be fired from a crossbow. Crossbows require short, heavy steel bolts. If your quiver runs empty during a long dungeon crawl, your weapon becomes useless dead weight in your inventory.

  • Pick up free practice bolts: Recruits inside Dayspring Canyon shoot practice bolts into wooden dummies all day. Walk up to the straw targets and interact with them to collect every bolt sticking out of the surface.
  • Buy bulk bundles from fort vendors: Once you recruit Gunmar and Sorine Jurard into the fort, both characters function as specialized merchants. Sorine consistently stocks up to 200 steel bolts in her trade menu, refreshing her supply every two in-game days.
  • Forge your own bolts: Crossbow ammunition crafting requires the Steel Smithing perk in your Smithing skill tree. Take one steel ingot and one piece of firewood to the Fort Dawnguard forge to produce ten steel bolts.
  • Invest in Hunter's Discipline: Located in the Archery tree, this perk doubles your chances of recovering fired bolts from defeated enemy bodies. Without this perk, many bolts break upon impact and vanish.
  • Search fallen Dawnguard patrols: If you encounter skirmishes along country roads between vampire packs and Dawnguard squads, search the defeated hunters. Each Dawnguard fighter carries a crossbow and an average of 20 to 30 steel bolts.

Remember that standard city blacksmith anvils in places like Whiterun or Solitude will not let you craft bolts. Even if you carry plenty of steel ingots and firewood, the recipe only appears in the menu at Fort Dawnguard. Make sure to forge several hundred bolts in a single visit before setting out on your adventures.

Complete Ancient Technology Quests to Unlock Armor Piercing Crossbows

The basic crossbow hits hard in early levels, but tougher enemies carry heavy armor ratings later in the game. To keep your damage high, you need the Enhanced Crossbow (the upgraded version that bypasses armor), followed later by Dwarven models. Fort Dawnguard holds the secrets to these advanced designs, but you must help a Breton engineer named Sorine Jurard.

Sorine joins the castle after you complete the early Dawnguard story quest called A New Order. Once she moves into the western armory wing of the fort, she offers a repeatable series of six side missions titled Ancient Technology. Each mission sends you to recover Dwemer schematics hidden in locked chests throughout Skyrim.

  1. Speak with Sorine Jurard inside Fort Dawnguard and ask if there is anything she needs help with.
  2. Accept her request to retrieve an ancient crossbow blueprint from a randomly selected bandit camp or Dwemer ruin.
  3. Clear the target dungeon, defeat the boss, and take the Dwemer schematic paper from the main chest.
  4. Return to Fort Dawnguard and hand the blueprint back to Sorine to unlock the recipe at the fort's forge.
  5. Bring your standard crossbow and two corundum ingots to the forge to create the Enhanced Crossbow.
  6. Continue asking Sorine for more work to unlock blueprints for exploding elemental bolts, the basic Dwarven Crossbow, and the Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow.

The Enhanced Crossbow shares the same 19 base damage as your starter model, but it carries a powerful built-in combat perk. Every shot automatically ignores 50 percent of your target's armor rating. This makes an enormous difference when fighting bandit chiefs and Draugr deathlords wearing thick metal plate.

When you finish all six of Sorine's quests, you unlock the Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow. This weapon delivers 22 base damage while keeping that same 50 percent armor-piercing bonus. When paired with exploding elemental bolts, each shot triggers a burst of fire, ice, or shock that staggers groups of enemies.

Choosing Vampires Limits Upgrades While New Editions Add Varieties

During the main Dawnguard quest Bloodline, Lord Harkon offers to turn you into a Vampire Lord. This choice splits the storyline in half and permanently changes your access to ranged weapons. If you accept Harkon's gift and join the vampires, Fort Dawnguard becomes hostile and bars you from Sorine's forge.

Siding with the vampires means you cannot complete the Ancient Technology quests or craft upgraded Dwarven models. But becoming a vampire does not take away your starter crossbow. As long as you collected the free crossbow from Durak before accepting Harkon's blood, you keep the weapon and your bolts.

  • Ambush Dawnguard patrols: Hostile Dawnguard squads regularly track down vampire players on roads, carrying basic crossbows and bundles of steel bolts.
  • Use high-level Illusion spells: Spells like Harmony or Pacify temporarily calm Fort Dawnguard vendors, allowing you to trade for bolts without triggering combat.
  • Pickpocket Dawnguard scouts: High sneak skill allows you to creep behind Dawnguard outposts and lift bolts directly from their quivers.

If you play the Skyrim Anniversary Edition, these faction limits matter much less. That edition includes the Expanded Crossbow Pack, which adds Silver, Orcish, Elven, Glass, Ebony, and Daedric crossbows to the wider world. You can buy these new weapons from the Fletcher shop in Solitude or craft them at any normal blacksmith forge once you unlock the matching Smithing perk.
