Is the Umarex Notos classified as a pistol or a carbine?

The manufacturer specifies this platform as the Umarex Notos Carbine .22 Caliber PCP Pellet Gun Air Rifle. Many shooters look for it under the pistol label due to its compact, lightweight dimensions, but it is built as a carbine platform to provide the shoulder support needed for steady shot placement. If your primary goal is clean backyard pest management rather than plinking with a standard handgun replica, this carbine layout gives you superior stability. If you strictly want a conventional sidearm for plinking drills, explore our review of the best CO2 BB gun options instead.

Does the Umarex Notos shoot .22 caliber pellets or steel BBs?

The Umarex Notos shoots .22 caliber pellets exclusively. It is designed specifically as a .22 caliber pellet air rifle, which sets it apart from familiar backyard replicas like the Glock 19 Gen3 or Umarex Beretta APX that shoot .177 caliber steel BBs. Pellets deliver the flight stability and energy transfer required for garden pests, whereas round steel BBs cannot provide the accuracy or clean impact needed for pest control work.

Which magazine fits the Umarex Notos PCP platform?

The platform requires the Umarex Notos 7-Shot Rotary Magazine. This factory magazine is engineered to fit the Notos Carbine .22 Caliber PCP Pellet Gun Air Rifle to cycle .22 caliber pellets reliably without jamming. It cannot use stick magazines from standard handguns, such as the Umarex 19-shot packs made for .177 caliber BB pistols like the Umarex XBG or TDP 45.

Does the Umarex Notos run on 12-gram CO2 cartridges?

No, the Umarex Notos does not run on 12-gram CO2 cartridges. It is built as a pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) air rifle, which means it uses compressed high-pressure air stored in an onboard cylinder rather than disposable CO2 powerlets. Handguns like the Glock 17 Gen3 rely on piercing individual 12-gram CO2 cartridges, but the Notos requires a high-pressure air fill from a hand pump, tank, or dedicated air compressor.

Can standard Umarex .177 BB pistol magazines work in the Notos?

No, standard Umarex .177 BB magazines are completely incompatible with the Notos platform. Drop-free 19-shot stick magazines are designed exclusively for .177 steel BB guns like the Beretta Elite II, TAC, and Smith & Wesson M&P 40. The Notos uses its own 7-shot rotary magazine sized specifically for .22 caliber pellets, so always verify the exact model name and caliber before purchasing spare magazines.

How does the Notos compare to standard CO2 air pistols for backyard pest management?

The Notos Carbine provides a dedicated .22 caliber pellet action with a 7-shot rotary magazine, delivering the consistent shot placement needed to cleanly manage garden pests. In contrast, standard .177 air pistols like the Smith & Wesson M&P 40 fire steel BBs at up to 410 fps from a 19-shot drop-free mag using 12-gram CO2 power, which works well for casual plinking but lacks the pellet weight required for humane pest disposal. To explore full-power shoulder-mounted alternatives for hunting pests, look through our guide to the best tactical air rifle choices for 2026.
