The rifle should be treated as loaded until personally checked. Adult supervision and formal instruction matter more than the product’s beginner-friendly appearance.
Steel BBs can ricochet from hard surfaces, while pellets can penetrate thin or improvised barriers. Cardboard alone isn’t a safe backstop, and household fences aren’t designed as pellet traps. Everyone near the firing area needs eye protection. A controlled range removes many of the risks that come with casual backyard setups.
Secure storage means keeping the rifle unloaded, locked, and inaccessible to unauthorized people. BBs and pellets should be stored separately, and local transport rules should be checked before moving the rifle outside the home. Some jurisdictions regulate airguns more strictly than their appearance suggests. Private property doesn’t automatically permit discharge.
Hunting use introduces another layer of responsibility. Species rules, seasons, licensing requirements, minimum energy standards, and permitted equipment vary by location. A .177 multi-pump rifle may be unlawful or unsuitable for many birds and some small game.
